Navigating Communication Complexity: Skills for Success

The City of Burnaby Transportation Department engaged Uplift Engagement Communications (Uplift) to design and facilitate a full-day professional development workshop focused on strengthening communication skills, conflict management, and team collaboration. The workshop brought together more than 35 staff members from across the department for a highly interactive learning experience.
Titled Navigating Communication Complexity: Skills for Success, the workshop was designed to support employees in navigating challenging workplace interactions while building stronger connections with colleagues and stakeholders. The program combined practical communication tools, self-reflection, and team-based learning to help participants develop greater confidence and effectiveness in complex communication situations.
The workshop explored topics including values-based communication, conflict-handling styles, relationship-building, and strategies for managing difficult conversations. Recognizing the diverse roles and responsibilities within the department, the content was tailored to provide practical skills that participants could immediately apply in their day-to-day work.
To encourage engagement and knowledge retention, the workshop incorporated a variety of interactive learning methods, including Fishbowl dialogue sessions, facilitated roundtable discussions, team-building activities, communication games, and real-world scenario role plays. These activities created opportunities for participants to practice new skills, learn from one another, and strengthen relationships across the team.
The result was an energetic and collaborative learning environment where staff actively participated, shared experiences, and embraced opportunities to step outside their comfort zones. By combining professional development with meaningful team connection, the workshop supported the City of Burnaby Transportation Department's ongoing commitment to effective communication, collaboration, and employee growth.
